Farzad Sadjadi
I’m currently a second year Graduate student in Physics at the University of Minnesota, working on my Ph.D. I already received my Bachelors of Science in Physics from the same school. I’ve been a Teaching Assistant here since I was a junior, so I’m pretty set in my plans to become a college professor of Physics.
I have a wide range of scientific interests, but I have chosen to focus primarily on astrophysics, specifically helioseismology. Since mid-2003 I have been working on a broadly capable genetic algorithm and graphical user interface, written in Matlab (and soon to be in Obj-C). Current research includes the effects of population size on optimization speeds and the potential for self-optimizing algorithm routines. Starting in early 2004 I have conducted research towards a low energy, tunable source of centimeter wave, coherent Cerenkov radiation for use in physical and electrical research applications. Using a 3 KeV electron gun and a piece of titanium dioxide, a small quantity of microwave radiation was generated. Current work is focused on showing that this signal was indeed Cerenkov radiation and not some aberration of the experimental setup. The theoretical underpinnings of the experiment are also being investigated. Starting in early 2005 I began to investigate MTI-type radar for use in target tracking. This led me to begin to formulate a comprehensive data model that will, once completed, be able to generate highly realistic MTI radar data for use in the development and testing of new tracking algorithms (model is currently in Matlab, with plans to port to Obj-C). In the fall of 2005 I began conducting research in (photo)electron microscopy.
As far as Macs are concerned, I started young. My dad got a PowerBook 180c right when they came out in 1993. I strayed to the Windows side for the games, but I switched back in college, picking up a PowerBook G4 (aluminum). Just because I like new processors (and that the PowerBook was getting a little crowded), I got an iMac last January. Keeping the two in sync has been a hassle ever since, hence the My Dream App idea.
