My Dream App

Welcome to My Dream App!

The event where 24 finalists compete for a chance to have their dream app made into reality.

First time? Check out what this contest is about and create an account for free. If you are already a member, please login to remove this message. Thanks!

First off, I’ve learned the hard way that if you post a new topic from the “Forums” section, it doesn’t show up here in the “Blog” section — but all topics do show up on the forums pages. And it looks like by the number of views, that more people access these posts from clicking on the contestant’s “Blog” link than through the forums. So, I’m going to put links to the two posts that aren’t showing up on my Blog page here:

What Modules Would Be Best for Ground Control?

UI - Part ][

And, here’s the screen captures for the UI - Part ][ for redundant eye candy to encourage you to visit the posts above ;0

So, if you have an extra minute and you haven’t seen those topics yet, feel free to check them out.

So, now that I’ve gone and confused everyone, let’s make-up a topic here: A Dock Replacement?

Is Ground Control suited to be a Dock replacement? I’ve stated earlier that I didn’t feel that GC should or could practically replace the Dock. However, I have read repeated comments that some would like to see that happen. One suggestion was to incorporate a module that replicated the functions of the Dock–basically an app launcher. At first, I brushed aside the comment, but it kept popping back up in several other comments. So, finally, I gave it some more thought and here is what I thunk:

The idea has grown on me, as I realized that not everyone likes their dock on the side–and it does take up even more screen space at lower resolutions — not everyone has 30″ Apple Cinema Displays(but they’re such a deal now!). And, my initial thought for those that absolutely want the Dock on the bottom of their screen still is to have the dock rise up on top of GC when it was revealed. But this led to the obvious problem of what to do with the dock when the pop-up menus of GC are revealed? You could have the Dock hide, but what would trigger that? Clicking on the Module? And then wait for the Dock to disappear in animation and the pop-up pop up? That just begun to seem convoluted. It started making sense to add a Launch Module.

Maybe I’m a dork for taking so long to see this, but I didn’t necessarily want to…I didn’t want…I did, I … well,

[JamesEarlJonesVoice]Come on, what was it that you were afraid of my son?[/JamesEarlJonesVoice]

I, I, I didn’t want to make Uncle Steve mad at me.

[JamesEarlJonesVoice]Uncle Steve? You don’t work for Apple my son. Steve can’t fire you[/JamesEarlJonesVoice]

H, h, he can’t?

[JamesEarlJonesVoice]No, of course not my foolish boy. He only has your entire hard drive indexed and stored on Apple’s servers and can cancel your iTunes account and remotely cause kernel panics on you machine, but he can’t fire you.[/JamesEarlJonesVoice]

Ah, thanks. I feel so much better.

So, hey! Does anybody else have any comments about incorporating a Dock-like launch Module and replacing the Dock altogether?

I’ll try to have a new mockup including a Launch Module as soon as possible.
